The Lawyers Win

It’s presently being reported that the jury has reached a decision in the mutual defamation suits of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. The jury found that each had defamed the other and awarded damages to both of them. From NBC’s report:

Johnny Depp won his defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard on Wednesday and the jury awarded him $15 million in damages.

Depp was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages in his defamation suit. The jury also awarded Heard $2 million in compensatory damages.

The jury in Fairfax, Virginia, began deliberating Friday.

Depp sued Heard for $50 million after she wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post in 2018 in which she called herself a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” Heard countersued Depp for $100 million.

I doubt that either one of them won anything when you take lost revenue into account. As far as I can tell only their lawyers won.

I’m still trying to figure out how it’s possible to defame either one of these two noxious nutjobs.

Heh. Two blogposts on Depp/Heard. None on Sussman, in an “analysis blog” written by a “non-partisan.”

As usual, Jonathon Turley writes a sober assessment:

    https://jonathanturley.org/2022/06/01/sussmann-juror-there-are-bigger-things-than-a-possible-lie-to-the-fbi/#more-189431

The analysis issues write themselves: 1) a fair minded jury?, 2) a fair minded judge?, 3) ends justify the means?, 4) legal treatment of Michael Flynn/Roger Stone/Papadopolous vs a Hillary surrogate, 5) the damage done to a presidency by media propaganda and a seditionist like HRC, 6) a corrupt senior FBI leadership. I could go on.

This blog regularly cites the decline of faith in institutions. Any wonder? Seriously? And yet this blog chose to stay silent. Yes, Johnny and Amber are broken individuals. So are our legal foundations, media and supposed watchdog institutions. And it all goes back to people.

  • In a single day I have had complaints that I remark on the causes célèbres of Republicans too frequently and that I don’t remark on them enough. Why not consider the possibility that the case did not rise to the level of “guilt beyond reasonable doubt”?

I was probably a bit unfair. It is true that you have not covered this case which I think was the proper course. At this point conservatives have a record of claiming scandal and having investigation after investigation and ending up with nothing. Eventually they are bound to find something since there is no lack of corruption amongst Democrats but on these big scandals they are shooting clunkers, worse than Ben Simmons.

But now the whole world can see why Depp had to wear so much makeup.

  • One of the consequences of having had as much training as I have is that I always see the face under the makeup. I always see the person behind the performance as well.

That makes it hard for me to watch certain actors/actresses, e.g. Vivien Leigh. I don’t just see the beauty or the performance; I see the dysfunction. It’s hard for me to watch Marilyn Monroe. Too much injury.
