Standards of proof on Iran

I wanted to put in one last word on Iran today. According to AFP (cited at Truthout.org) in a forthcoming article in The New Yorker, Seymour Hersh will claim that:

A classifed draft CIA assessment has found no firm evidence of a secret drive by Iran to develop nuclear weapons, as alleged by the White House…

Note the term “firm evidence”. There apparently is not proof beyond reasonable doubt that Iran is developing nuclear weapons. But, as I’ve frequently said before and, I believe, substantiated there is a preponderance of evidence that Iran is doing so.

A preponderance of evidence is enough, I believe, to claim that Iran is developing nuclear weapons, engage in negotiations as if Iran were, indeed, developing nuclear weapons, and enough to impose sanctions on the Iranian regime. It is not enough to invade or bomb Iran. Preemptive war may be moral; preventive war is not.
