Lost in Translation

This passage from the editors of the Washington Post:

Mr. Obama conceded that some vital “details” have not yet been worked out, including how the lifting of sanctions on Iran would be tied to its implementation of steps such as reducing its stockpile of enriched uranium and its base of installed centrifuges. Worryingly, the fact sheets issued by the U.S. and Iranian governments differ sharply on this point: While the U.S. version says that “sanctions will be suspended after” the International Atomic Energy Agency “has verified that Iran has taken all of its key nuclear-related steps,” Tehran’s account is that “at the same time as the start of Iran’s nuclear-related implementation work, all of the sanctions will be automatically annulled on a single specified day.”

suggests that the remaining work to secure an agreement with Iran is more than just a few details. Or else somebody is lying. Maybe everybody.

Not to worry. They’re probably just the 24 hour kind.

This is a framework agreement, not a final agreement, so yes there are still disagreements and the timing of sanctions relief is one of them. We’ll have to see what the details are in a final agreement, assuming there is one.

This was specified in every link you provided in an earlier post. This coming from the Washington Post is not news. The very fact that it is called a “framework” suggests that a lot of details need to be worked out.

I would choose the latter one….

“The very fact that it is called a “framework” suggests that a lot of details need to be worked out.”

And, as they say “the devil is in the details.” The details are what matter. And, if the president caves on the details in order to achieve a short term legacy dealing with an Iranian deal, the odds are that he will do it, IMO.

Maybe it’s just me. And I understand M&A contracts aren’t international treaties. But some negotiating and contract issues apply universally.

This whole thing is a farce, for show and legacy purposes only. No money changes hands; no governance or operational control issues change; no liability or upside issues change, and no indemnities apply in an M&A deal that is a “framework” and not a fully negotiated deal. Frameworks are called letters of intent and are not worth zip, nada. Squat. There is no teeth in this whatsoever…….and they can’t even tell the same story as to what the deal, er, “framework” is. The only thing material that will result is relief from sanctions for empty promises. Wait until the Iranians look at us and say “so sue me.”

Surely nuclear arms agreements deserve at least some hint of the understanding of terms and recourse provisions of a damned M&A deal.

Drew, I think that they’ve announced they’re engaged to get engaged, and that it is time to think about the possibility that you may need to buy them a toaster oven a couple of years down the road.

Or perhaps I should have said “waffle iron”.
