Based on the data for the most recent reporting week ending April 5 which was published today and which in turn is derived from the country reports of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, over 300 new cases were reported in that week. If past experience is any gauge 40-50% of those who contract the disease will die of it. It is also estimated that the actual figures are probably two or three times as high as the verified reported figures.
Or, in other words, if the outbreak has ended it’s because the disease has now become endemic in West Africa. The little downturn that was reported so breathlessly last month has not continued.
