Endorsement Dump

This morning I identified two additional newspaper endorsements, one of them for Obama, the other for Romney. That makes the total count 39 newspapers and magazines that have endorsed Barack Obama for president, 44 45 that have endorsed Mitt Romney.

Update

Thanks to Icepick for finding the endorsement of Romney by the Detroit News, a self-described “conservative paper”. I have been unable to determine who, if anyone, the News endorsed in 2008.

Something that’s important to keep in mind is that in 2008 495 newspapers and other publications endorsed Obama while 215 endorsed McCain, more than 2 to 1. The crossovers, i.e. switches in party endorsement relative to the previous election cycle, was 6 to 1 in favor of Obama. This will be a very different election.

  • I saw that a conservative paper in Detroit had endorsed Romney, but as it didn’t seem to be a switch I didn’t pay it too much mind. Ah, here it is, the Detroit News.

    Who were the two newspapers you referenced in your first paragraph?

  • The Charleston Daily Mail of Charleston, West Virginia and the Star Herald of Scotts Bluff, Nebraska.

    I’ve also found some more Obama endorsements since posting: The Northwest Asian Weekly (Washington), the Austin Chronicle, and the Capital Times of Madison, Wisconsin. The latter two endorsed Obama in 2008.

  • The Washington Post has, to the shock and amazement of a bewildered world*, endorsed Obama. Apparently because he’s been such a rousing success and they relish the idea of going over the fiscal cliff in January.

    * That would be sarcasm.
