Eclipse of 2024

My wife and I just finished watching the solar eclipse. Here in Chicago they’re saying we had 94% totality. The weather is perfect for it—hardly a cloud in the sky. We carefully looked up with our solar glasses.

Quite an experience.

Here in Colorado, it was meh.

I was at the center of the totality for the 2017 eclipse and it was one of the most memorable events of my life. So memorable that I really wanted to make plans to get on the totality for this eclipse, but it didn’t work out because of other commitments. And it’s probably a good thing, because we would have gone to Texas, and they mostly got clouded out.

My daughter is in the totality in Vermont and is hiking to the top of a mountain with a friend to see it. Last I heard from her, skies were clear. I’m still waiting for her report, she’s in an area with no cell signal.

Glad to hear it was so interesting. Here in No GA we supposedly had 86%. But it was a big nothing. 15 minutes that were similar to a cloud passing overhead. A tad of a cooling.

The only notable thing: the paper wasps (quite the nuisance in spring) absolutely disappeared for a half hour. The carpenter bees? Not so much.

    Drew,

It’s a big nothing unless you’re in the totality, which is a very narrow band.

Here where I live in Texas, in the band of 100% totality, the morning started out iffy. As the day went on there was patchy sunshine. By the time the eclipse started, it could be observed as clouds passed . At the time of the totality, it could be seen steadily, along with all the unusual phenomena that attend one of these events — the darkness, the cooling, a star or two. Then as the eclipse subsided, the sky cleared and the sun shone brightly, some puffy clouds blowing by. After all of us strained our eyes searching for the sun all afternoon.

I think that’s right, certainly my conclusion. Interestingly, we have a cottage on Kelly’s Island about two hours west of Cleveland. Right in the totality path. Thought about a last second road trip. But…..

Anyway, there is an important basketball game tonight……… at least for me. Purdue total underdogs. We shall see.

We were outside with the adopted grandkids and all of the other neighborhood kids came over. Had about 15 minutes of a good view then clouded over. Had a good time with the kids.

Where in N GA Drew? I’m in Woodstock, NW suburb of ATL.

Agree the eclipse was mostly a snooze here. I noted and took a few photos of the foliage shadows. Noticed the birds were noisy beforehand and became silent during the event.

We got near 90%, through thickening clouds. Thick enough clouds that I got a few good images with an unfiltered phone only.

My sister found a company that is recycling gently used eclipse glasses for use in foreign countries. I have some left, so I’ll be shipping them here:
    Eclipse Glasses USA, LLC
