You Be the Policy-Maker

The first two graphs are from Worldometer.info. The second two are from the Illinois Department of Public Health.

What’s the right policy?

The pandemic is over. There will not be a second wave, because there aren’t enough susceptibles left. Open everything up.

Agreed but not an all clear, rather, proceed at your own risk because Covid 19 deaths are likely to double by the end of the year and one of them may be you.

One have to be careful about charts and graphs. Some states have shown charts that have spikes due to number of deaths/hospitalizations/positive tests being recorded on that day, not the number actually OCCURRING on that day. Makes a big difference if you’re a policy maker. Easy to get panicked or too blase, or worse, be used as a justification for a preferred policy.

If I was the House Speaker, I would initiate impeachment proceedings against the Governor. Could be an opening.

  • As you know the House Speaker has problems of his own but there is a strong case for impeachment for abuse of power (mostly impelled by the legislature itself).

Sometimes the best defense is a good offense. Pritzker’s job approval rating is down to 52%, probably lost more support with the loss of fall football. Even monarchs understood the value of a parliament to help demonstrate support for their decisions.

(I am joking about impeachment; probably be better for Madigan to go on the offense against the federal government / Trump. Not sure attacking statues is going to help him.)

It looks like we have a lot of small patterns of increased cases, with lagging death rates (though at levels far lower than in the Spring), which draw attention about the time cases are starting to decline. It seems that people’s perceptions of what is happening lags behind reality.

Either cases surge when the virus comes into contact with a heretofore relatively untouched population with susceptible members and start to decline through its own success, or people take precautions when they come to know of infections in their community before policy is discussed. The only think I have right now is a deep suspicion of loud drinking establishments, but I’ve been that way for twenty years.
