Yesterday’s Capitol Shooting

I find the incident that took place in Washington, DC yesterday that culminated in a young woman being shot dead by Capitol police very disturbing. I sincerely hope it’s completely and fairly investigated.

Here are a couple of sample references on the use of deadly force by the police:

New Jersey Attorney General’s policy on the use of force
Report on Police Use of Force Statutes from the Center of Research in Criminology, Indiana University of Pennsylvania

I can understand how it happened, but I tend to believe nonetheless that shooting a woman who was not armed is a bad shoot.

    I agree, Michael.

I guess that’s what I meant by disturbing. If the stories in the media are to be believed, she wasn’t armed, she hadn’t actually injured anyone (the injured officer does not appear to have been injured by her), it’s not clear that she was attempting to flee, and shooting at her with an infant in the car sure sounds to me like they were putting innocents in danger.

Kudos for listing this story. Politicians thanked the Capitol police for killing this unarmed black woman. Of course it will be buried. More important to be concerned about NFL nicknames and keeping WWII veterans out of memorials that are normally open air and unguarded.
