Winning on the Ground

In all of the news articles and opinion pieces on the non-starter talks in Geneva between the Syrian government and their opponents there’s something crucial missing. Inch by inch, town by town, the Russians, Iranians, and the Syrian government are restoring control of the country to the internationally recognized Syrian government. Right now they seem to be advancing on Aleppo.

You’d think that might be seen as an important factor.

Haven’t read this yet but looks interesting. CO2 captured from atmosphere converted directly to methanol.

  • Yeah, that’s the sort of thing I’ve been talking about. The two gotchas are always scaling up and doing it at a competitive cost.

That conversion has been under investigation since at least when I was in school. The issues have been the ones you might suspect: a good, stable catalyst, energy efficiency (low temperature conversion), conversion yield and reagent usage. These guys appear to have done this in the lab with a good catalyst and at relatively low temperature, so that’s good stuff.

I noted funding by USC, perhaps augmented by govt. If global warming is so dire a problem, one would think that resources galore would be directed at this. And publicity. They could save the world. Don’t hold your breath, a tax isn’t involved.

In any event, I suspect you can find hundreds of papers on the subject if you are interested. These guys, at least in a lab, have done something that has previously eluded others. That’s cool.

I think there’s an explanation for the observed behaviors other than fraud. There are a lot of people whose worldview consists entirely of divvying up the proceeds. They can’t even taking risks, investing, and building businesses. But they can imagine taking the proceeds of that process and giving them to others.

I think that’s exactly what is going on, and have believed it for years. Global Warming is just a convenient pretext, no different than tugging on heartstrings to elicit support for taxes to help the poor. Taxes that won’t in fact, um…………….get spent for the benefit of the poor. I doubt it’s worth the aggravation to determine whether that’s fraud, marketing or politics.
