What’s an Animated Film?

Over at Gone Hollywood there’s a list of the highest grossing animated films of all time. My answer: poppycock. At $2.7 billion (and counting) Avatar is clearly the highest grossing animated film of all time.

Good question. Seven of the 10 are what I’d call “animated” – snob that I am, I don’t consider CGI (real) animation. Snob that I am.

is clearly the highest grossing animated film of all time.

Most of Avatar isn’t animated, though, unless you’re counting all CGI as animation.

To be honest, I find that list misleading, particularly with all the old pre-Disney Renaissance movies on there. The old movies didn’t have anywhere near the competition that modern movies do now, particularly from “home entertainment” (like television, the internet, home DVD and Blu-Ray players, and the like). The movie business in general drew far vaster crowds back then.

Fantasia is part live action / part animation. I suppose that opens the door to a lot of hybrids, but I don’t know where you stop at that point. I assume animation was used in Star Wars and the Lord of the Rings as well.
