At The Week David Faris makes several predictions of what would happen if Democrats were to retake the House of Representatives in 2018. Here they are in bullet form:
- There will finally be real investigations into Trump’s scandals.
- The Trump domestic legislative agenda would be dead.
- Trump would still be able to transform the courts and start wars.
- Democrats should do more than obstruct.
which I think are pretty fair as far as they go. Something depends on who the new Democratic majority would be. Would the new majority be able to resist impeaching Trump? I don’t think so. I think they’d have a rebellion in their caucus on their hands if they just tried to keep Trump as an issue without trying to remove him from office. Keep in mind that a “high crime or misdemeanor” is whatever the House says it is.
Would the House Democrats attempt to expand the PPACA, enact DACA into law, pass “comprehensive immigration reform” whatever that may be, pass gun control, or address any of the other issues they’ve whined about but done little about including the last time they held the House?
Don’t expect it. Republican or Democratic leadership, the House is mostly in the business of getting re-elected and they’ll do the least they can without losing the issues they run on or getting booted out of office.
As a non-partisan, I hope they do take the house. Divided government is preferable to what the parties currently engage in – 50+1 dogmatic policy shoved down the throats of the American People.
Pelosi will probably remain leader.
