We’re #1!

And the worst state to live in according to its own residents is…Illinois! Here’s a report from the Daily Mail:

If you live in Illinois, Connecticut or Rhode Island, the chances are you know someone who is not happy. Not happy at all.

Around a quarter of the population living in these regions have described them each as the ‘worst possible state to live in’, according to a Gallup survey.

The map data doesn’t explain the nature of the residents’ grievances.

However, classic socio-economic indicators would clearly be relevant – including work-life balance, healthcare, crime levels, education, housing, income and the environment.

While 21-25 per cent of people ranked these three states as the ‘worst’, Louisiana and Mississippi also featured prominently – with 17-20 per cent describing the two southern states as the worst.

The reasons for the levels of dissatisfaction are not entirely obvious. In Connecticut and Illinois governmental financial mismanagement is clearly a factor. The three least happy states were all carried by Clinton but the happiest states are nearly evenly divided between having been carried by Trump and having been carried by Clinton.

As a group the happiest states (Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Texas, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, New Hampshire, Maine) to my eye are also the least diverse. Make of that what you will.

I can only speculate that if you’re bombarded on a daily basis by complaints about how awful things are, many from the media but also from your neighbors, it can be demoralizing.

Texas one of the least diverse? It’s 40% Hispanic.

  • Texas is the exception. The other states in the list e.g. Utah, North Dakota, Maine, are among the least diverse. Presumably, strong economic growth is another factor behind the states with the happiest residents.

    Illinois should do well.

Work-life balance? – every year half live, and half get murdered.

Healthcare ? – if your wounds are treatable, Stroger Hospital has a boffo ER.

    Crime levels? – Got’m.

Education? – great Adult education Series: How Not to Get Beaten by A Chicago Cop.

Housing? – You, too, can spend half your income in property taxes.

Income? – avoid the middle man, send the rest directly to Mike Madigan.

Environment? – Make lifelong friends in subzero weather on the cozy grates of lower Wacker Drive.

I don’t see what the griping is about……

It appears the Michigan State U administration reads Glittering Eye…..

  • I think that’s just the tip of the iceberg for women’s athletics and academe.
