Update on Skyrim

I’m still playing Skyrim, have reached Level 28, and am about at what I suspect is the midpoint of the game. My character is quite skilled in the use of one-handed weapons (I’m dual wielding), heavy armor, and smithing and is moderately skilled in speech, lockpicking, and enchanting.

Something interesting happens around Level 20 or, at least, it did for me. The game became significantly more satisfying. My character was just skilled enough that I could actually do things. Maybe I’m just a slow learner.

Right now I can’t decide whether to just keep plugging along or play as quickly as I can to the end of the game. I’m sorely tempted to start over with a new character now that I really understand the game. I’d like to see how the game plays with a rogue (maybe specializing in lockpicking and stealth) or a mage.

Stealth is in my opinion more satisfying, although it gets a little too easy once you max out your sneaking skills. I’d recommend working on bow skills too.

By the way, I just say Hunger Games, and it sucked. We got more entertainment value out of Mirror Mirror.

    You have all been warned.

  • Rolling polyhedric dice……natural 20!

  • I still haven’t got back to Skyrim. Hope to play some more this week.

Where are you in the main questline? I sort of took a detour to work on some side questlines. I’m now leader of the Thieves’ Guild, and I’ve done the companions up to the point where I have to make a decision to really “join” them. I won’t say more than that so as not to ruin the surprise. I’ve also done some of the Thalmor quests and they aren’t very happy with me. It looks like I might have to choose between the imperials and stormcloaks at some point – not sure yet what I’ll do there.

So far I’ve found the combination of stealth and archery along with a good bow to be an extremely powerful combination. I can usually one-shot the weaker adversaries from stealth. The more powerful ones I can get down to about a 1/2 health before I switch to melee.

I’ve fought a lot of dragons and that’s actually one of the things that annoy me. The dragon AI isn’t very smart – for example one spent all it’s time trying to kill an unkillable NPC while I whacked away at it. They also seem far too common – it’s rare I can travel any significant distance without running into one. Also, after losing a couple of horses, I learned to leave them away from the dragons I intend to fight.
