Trump’s Veto

I suppose I should comment on President Trump’s veto of S.J. Res. 7. The text of the joint resolution is here. The president’s veto message is here.

I do not think the United States should be supporting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s war against Yemen at all. I think that President Obama was wrong to do so and I think that President Trump is wrong to do so. I do not think the KSA is our friend let alone our ally. Both of us have a burr under our saddle about Iran. I’m more worried about the KSA than about Iran.

That having been said I don’t think much of S. J. Res. 7, either. As President Trump notes U. S. forces aren’t engaged in combat in Yemen and that’s the emphasis of the joint resolution. It’s an order to withdraw forces coupled with a shot across the bow.

Basically, what I think the Congress should have done is given the president 90 days to show cause why we should support the KSA’s war (support of an ally isn’t nearly enough reason) and then denied funding.

Wonder if Trump or anyone in the family has financial involvement in Saudi Arabia?

We all know the KSA are not choir boys. But president after president have refused to cut off the Kingdom. There is always the possibility that all of our presidents are batshit crazy. But perhaps they hold information we are not privy to. Presidents of all stripes adopt similar stances. I have no clue.

Your proposal is sensible unless there is something we don’t know.

Steve has once again raided the opium locker.

the rulers of KSA do not shout Death to America! The Mullahs of Iran do, and mean it. That is the difference between the two realms. Realpolitiks.

  • And the mullahs of Iran do not finance the people who fly planes into our buildings.

So Gang A has 30 people and 4 of them gather 8,000 miles away to chant death to the family of Tars Tarkas.

Gang B occasionally kills a family member of TarsTarkas, and pays and trains other gangs to kill his family.

Realpolitiks says Tars needs to do something about Gang A.

Nice to affirm that you are a full member of the cult Drew. Defending Trump and family at every turn. You backed the investigations into the Clinton’s finances (I thought those were OK too) but God forbid we even suggest that we look at the possibility of financial influence of your leader.

A prominent Trump supporter has turned, and I at least find her commentary plausible:

As a child, due to an old and small library, I read every one of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan series. Then I discovered Barsoom, which I devoured until that was gone. Maybe it was my age, (10), but no other author has ever so completely absorbed me.

  • He was a great storyteller although, as I learned later, not a particularly creative one. I own all of his books, many in first editions.

Of all of his many books IMO the two best are Apache Devil and The War Chief. Burroughs had served in the cavalry in the Southwest during the campaign against Geronimo and not only had firsthand knowledge of what he was writing about but had enormous respect for the Apache.

Another of his best was The Mucker, set in Chicago, another subject with which Burroughs was familiar.

One of the problems with reading Burroughs today is that he was terribly racist. You need to explain his books to young people today very carefully for that reason.
