Today’s Update on the Pet Food Recall—5/14/2007

While I wasn’t paying attention to the ongoing pet food recall for a few days, Royal Canin has recalled an additional fifteen varieties of dry dog food and one additional variety of dry cat food:

SENSIBLE CHOICE® (available in pet specialty stores nationwide)
– SENSIBLE CHOICE® Chicken and Rice Adult (Dry Dog Food)
– SENSIBLE CHOICE® Chicken and Rice Reduced (Dry Dog Food)
– SENSIBLE CHOICE® Lamb and Rice Reduced (Dry Dog Food)
– SENSIBLE CHOICE® Chicken and Rice Puppy (Dry Dog Food)
– SENSIBLE CHOICE® Chicken and Rice Large Breed Puppy (Dry Dog Food)
– SENSIBLE CHOICE® NATURAL BLEND Adult (Dry Dog Food)
– SENSIBLE CHOICE® NATURAL BLEND Senior (Dry Dog Food)
– SENSIBLE CHOICE® NATURAL BLEND Puppy (Dry Dog Food)

KASCO® (available in pet specialty stores nationwide)
– KASCO® Chunks (Dry Dog Food)
– KASCO® Hi Energy (Dry Dog Food)
– KASCO® Maintenance (Dry Dog Food)
– KASCO® Mealettes (Dry Dog Food)
– KASCO® Mini Chunks (Dry Dog Food)
– KASCO® Puppy (Dry Dog Food

– KASCO® Cat (Dry Cat Food)

If you’re feeding your cat or dog any of those foods stop now! Return the balance of whatever you have left of the food to your retailer.

Basically, that accounts for the remainder of their rice-containing foods. The complete list of foods that Royal Canin has recalled is here.

There are more editorials, too. From the Wichita Eagle:

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., sponsored a measure approved by the Senate that would set up an early notification warning system for food-borne illness, boost inspections of foreign imports, and create a database to identify the most serious threats to the food supply. Congress should consider another Durbin bill that would centralize food safety under one agency and one law.

America’s food regulation currently is fragmented, with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in charge of meat, eggs and dairy products, the FDA in charge of vegetables and processed foods — and 10 other agencies involved in food safety.

The vulnerability of the nation’s food supply has been vividly exposed in recent months.

Congress must take bold action to tighten oversight and restore confidence in the food we eat.

It’s not surprising that Illinois Senator Richard Durbin should be the point man on reform of agriculture-related issues—he’s ADM’s man in Washington.

From the Danbury News Times:

The Centers for Disease Control reports there are more than 78 million cases of food poisoning every year. Sometimes the problem is with a domestic supplier, but often the problem is with a foreign supplier.

A better food safety system is needed, one that is fair to suppliers but also one that protects consumers.

The Chicago Tribune has a rather flaccid article urging support for reform of the FDA, taking off on the expression “food czar”.
