The Worse, the Better

I wonder how Sanders supporters feel the same way as Susan Sarandon at least as expressed in this interview cited at The Daily Beast:

“I think Bernie would probably encourage people, because he doesn’t have any ego in this thing,” Sarandon told him. “But I think a lot of people are, ‘Sorry, I just can’t bring myself to [vote for Clinton].’”

“How about you personally?” Hayes asked.

“I don’t know. I’m going to see what happens,” Sarandon said.

That bit of honesty prompted Hayes to stop in his tracks. “Really?” he asked incredulously.

“Really,” Sarandon said, adding that “some people feel that Donald Trump will bring the revolution immediately if he gets in, things will really explode.” Asked if she thinks that’s “dangerous,” she replied, “It’s dangerous to think that we can continue the way we are with the militarized police force, with privatized prisons, with the death penalty, with the low minimum wage, threats to women’s rights and think you can’t do something huge to turn that around.”

BTW, the title phrase, frequently attributed to Lenin, is actually almost a century earlier than Lenin. It was first written by Nikolay Chernyshevsky.

As a political analyst she’s a very good actress.

  • I think she’s actually quite pretty.

    Another racist.

    Dave:

She was very hot in White Palace.

This campaign keeps reminding me of the song Stuck In the Middle With You. “Clowns to the left of me, fascists to my right, here I am. . .”

    threats to women’s rights

yes, violence in the streets often comes from women scared for their right to abortion…..

Trump just said the three most important legitimate functions of the federal government are security, health care and education.

    What a maroon.

I would just remind everyone that one of the last people Trump spoke to before announcing was Bill Clinton. Cue conspiracy theories now.

Oh, Drew? Your candidate’s an idiot.

“My” candidate? Good thing you became a writer, what with that active imagination.

Now he’s apparently criticized Scott Walker for not raising taxes in Wisconsin. Yeah! Raise taxes, focus on health care and education! The Republican front runner.

I love this election. This is the Robot Restaurant of Kabuki-cho of elections. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_jBlQ1oRsI If only the Secret Service had a sense of adventure and had let them bring guns to the convention.

I’m sure we can all agree that increased government intervention in health care and education has yielded sparkling results.

Are you OK, Michael? You seem particularly unhinged recently.

  • I think the whole country has gotten unhinged and it’s going to get worse before it gets better. If ever.

See that’s the difference between us: you’re not really a fan of politics. So you don’t even know what you’re seeing.

Trump is running on the GOP ticket, but the big controversy in republican quarters is that he is not really a republican. In a way he is a party squatter.

What many politicos are deducing is that Trump is mainly running on his own platform which is why he is appealing to such a broad category of voters, while, at the same time, splitting the gut of conventional politics.

  • which is why he is appealing to such a broad category of voters, while, at the same time, splitting the gut of conventional politics

That’s a subject of hot contention. The opposite claim is that he appeals only to a very narrow segment of the population: white nativist racists.

I think the truth is probably somewhere in between. I think that Trump’s appeal is a lot broader than many think but I agree that he’s appealing to a specific segment of the population. I don’t think it’s white nativist racists; I think it’s Americans who are ready to burn the village in order to save it, to quote a cliche.

There are white nativist racists who support Trump, but they also buy white towels and sheets. If they could afford it, they would live in the same white only gated communities where progressives live. If they did not have to interact with black people, they would be good little progressives.

Trump supporters are not trying to break anything or burn down the village. Things are broken, and the village has been deserted for a long time. The Republicans sold one thing, but they delivered another.

Free-trade was supposed to be about trade, and by increasing trade, there would be increasing jobs. Instead, free-trade is about increased-imports and lost jobs, and Republicans tout this as progress. You get to lose your job, but you get to purchase cheap low quality goods using a consumer debt card. When you cannot afford the debt, they have rigged the bankruptcy laws to keep you in debt slavery.

I realize that Republicans think this is working perfectly, but a lot of people would disagree. Removing that which is broken is not breaking something. It is fixing it, and that is what terrifies them.

Then why the massive male-female gap? Surely women are as frustrated as men. And why the massive race and ethnicity gaps? Again, blacks and Latinos are more disadvantaged than white males, economically.

His core support is clearly white and male – the least historically disadvantaged demo.

You know, Dave, when you go looking for Nazis, bring a Jew, we’ll spot them before you will. You want to hunt misogynists? Ask a woman. There’s a reason Trump has no black support, and a reason he is endorsed by the KKK. The people who are the victims of racism, and the people who are open racists agree on Trump. You should consider the possibility that their instincts are correct.

  • Michael, you’re making an assumption that I think is premature. You’re assuming that the results of opinion polls mirror the election results closely. I think it’s possible that voters can disapprove of a candidate and vote for him or her anyway. I also think it’s possible for voters to lie to pollsters.

I presume your answer will be that it stands to reason. I’m not sure this is a reasonable election. I don’t think that we could see the results we’re seeing if nobody but white male nativist racists were voting for Trump. I don’t think the numbers add up.
