Don’t expect me to be all excited about the surge which may or may not have started today. While I sincerely wish that a means could be found to end the carnage in Baghdad and establish a strong central government in Iraq (IMO the only really acceptable outcome) and I have no doubt that the surge will bring temporary relief from the enormous level of violence that’s been going on in Baghdad recently, I doubt that it will achieve a permanent solution. IMO the present Iraqi government is structurally incapable of arriving at the sort of political solution that nearly everyone agrees is the real solution.
