The Report or Plan 9?

I get most of my news from online sources—major media outlets like ABC News, CBS, rarely NBC, the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, New York Times, Sun-Times, the Chicago Tribune, others. My wife gets most of her news from television news, mostly ABC. She also loves CBS Sunday Morning.

This morning when she came downstairs she asked me whether I wanted to watch the coverage of the Mueller report on ABC or the movie on TCM. I responded that Plan 9 From Outer Space (frequently cited as the worst movie ever made) must be available streaming somewhere.

A truly awful movie, but my nomination would be “Manos, Hands of Fate.” The MST3K coverage of that remains a classic.

  • I am proud to say I’ve never seen it. I’ll have to check it out on MST3K. It’s probably on NetFlix or Amazon Prime.

Oh, MST3K was great. I’m surprised it hasn’t been rebooted (or maybe it has and I missed it).

I don’t watch TV news at all anymore, except the local news occasionally (mainly for weather). I do like CBS Sunday Morning but rarely watch anymore. I used to be an NPR junkie, but for the past several months I’ve just wanted to disconnect. So all my news is from online sources, which I only go to if I’m feeling the urge.

  • It has been rebooted by NetFlix. Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt are in the reboot. I’m a fan of Felicia Day’s from her web series, The Guild.

Thirty years ago, long, long before MST3K, there was a syndicated show called Mad Movies. An LA comedy company redubbed old movies with new dialogue (somewhat as Woody Allen did in What’s Up, Tiger Lily?). It was hysterically funny. My wife and I still quote it.

  • Avoiding the news sounds like a prudent mental health move.

Cool, I like both Day and Oswalt, I will have to check that out if I ever start watching TV again.

Funny you should mention mental health – the bulk of my time these past few months was spent on my sister, who suffers from a rapid onset form of dementia. I’m now her legal guardian and finally got her moved into a memory care facility earlier this month. I have not been able to mentally deal with that and, at the same time, process all the BS in the “news.”

  • That’s tough, Andy. I’m sorry to hear it.

Dementia is hard on the entire family. My wife’s mother and maternal grandmother both suffered from some form of dementia late in life. Onset in their 70s, ultimately needing skilled nursing. Our nightmare scenario is for my wife’s following her mother and maternal grandmother.

  • The MST3K treatment of Manos is available on Amazon Prime Video.

Dementia is a terrible disease. For my sister, it’s frontotemporal dementia (FTD) which is similar to Alzheimer’s but affects different parts of the brain. My sister is only 65 and is otherwise very fit and healthy. She went from annoyingly forgetfull to being unable to perform many basic self-care skills in less than a year.

I certainly do hope your wife does not follow the maternal pattern.

It’s odd, and sad. But not remembered and almost unreported is the fact that the initial Mueller mandate was to to investigate Russian meddling. The report identifies very early Russian meddling issues. The Obama administration did not distinguish itself in their reactions at any point.

In addition to highlighting the fecklessness of the Obama Admin, in my opinion it simply indicates that all that talk about the evils of foreign intervention is just hot air. It’s been about getting Trump all along. And only that.

I’m sorry to hear that. There is mental illness in my family, including dementia, and it’s a very large burden.

    MST3k premiered in 1988 – almost 31 years ago.

  • Mad Movies premiered in 1985. Maybe not “long before” but before nonetheless.
