The Political Parties and Their Supporters

Pew Research finds a growing gap between Democrats and Republicans in terms of gender and educational attainment:

As the 2018 midterm elections approach, women and especially college graduates have moved toward the Democratic Party. By contrast, the Republican Party’s advantage in leaned party identification among white voters without a college degree has never been greater, dating back more than two decades.

While partisanship among voters usually does not change much on a yearly basis, some differences have widened over time, especially by educational attainment, gender and age. And these gaps are even larger when categories are combined, such as education, race and gender.

A new analysis of party identification, based on more than 10,000 interviews of registered voters conducted by Pew Research Center in 2017, finds that 37% of registered voters identify as independents, 33% are Democrats and 26% are Republicans.

but no in terms of race the gap is actually narrowing a trifle. Fewer blacks are reliably Democrats than was the case years ago.

The party identification growing the fastest is independent. However it’s spun the percentage of people who are 100% solidly Democratic or 100% solidly Republican is decreasing.

There’s been quite a bit of scholarship about party identification over the years, much of it controversial. What seems to be the case is that life experiences and circumstances influence party identification, i.e. it is not true that once you’re a Democrat you’re always a Democrat. For Democrats getting the youth vote is a good thing. But just as it is true that the young won’t always be young it’s also true that they won’t always be Democrats and that’s truer today than at any time since the Great Depression.

Let’s see then. If you are poor, white and dumb, you’re Republican because you are too dumb to let the Government help you.
If you are poor Black, and dumb, you’re Democrat because because Democrat candidates promise to help you, and commiserate with you about past injustice. And then don’t help you.
    How about this:
You are poor, dumb,(any color), and don’t trust government, you are a Republican.
You are poor, dumb, (any color), and still trust government, you’re still a Democrat. (for now).

President Trump got enough support among the under $50,000 a year income group to win, and I suspect that it is higher than any other Republican.

The Democrats do not give a damn about the poor. The Republicans do not bash the poor as much.

The Democrats are better about empowering people, but that is usually limited to minorities. The Republicans still act as if they believe that powerful (and usually wealthy) entities are somehow beyond reproach.
