“The Marx Brothers Movie That Is the Republican Presidential Race”

If Mitt Romney is Zeppo does that make Tim Pawlenty Gummo (who never appeared onscreen)? Or would that be Mitch Daniels?

One of my recurring nightmares is that someone in Hollywood will get the bright idea to start doing remakes of Marx Brothers movies. Adam Sandler as Groucho, Seth Rogan as Harpo and in a casting nod to equality, Sarah Jessica Parker as Chico.

Don’t tell me it could never happen. You know better.

BTW, Michael and Dave, speaking of the Marx brothers, did you see the link I called out to you over at OTB: A Unexpected Alliance? That’s a pairing I wouldn’t have guessed in a bazillion years.

As for remaking the movies, hell, I heard some numbskull was pushing a remake of Casablanca. Nothing is sacred to some of those folks.

Groucho and Eliot. That would have been a dinner to attend. No doubt Eliot thought himself the smarter of the two, but my money would have been on Groucho.

  • The snippets of the correspondence I’ve read suggest to me that Julius Marx was jerking Eliot’s chain. BTW, Eliot attended high school at the antecedent of Country Day School which tells a St. Louisan a good deal.

They remade Footloose. Isn’t that evidence enough Hollywood is out of ideas?

I’m surprised it hasn’t happened already.

I still can’t forgive hollywood for what they did the Cat in the Hat.

  • The Maltese Falcon that we usually think of (the one directed by John Huston starring Humphrey Bogart and Mary Astor) was actually a remake of a pretty good picture made less than ten years earlier. Singing in the Rain was the American remake of an earlier French picture.

The only really original guy in Hollywood is Sam Raimi. And I’m not just saying that because . . .

  • Congratulations, Michael! My wife asked me to tell you that we were happy for you and proud of you.

Shameless plug Michael, just shameless — albeit just really great news. Congrats.

On remakes. Well, it’s one thing to take a not so hot movie and make a great remake of it, and another to go the all-to-familiar Stagecoach route: Masterpiece —> piece of shit.

I’m going to date myself, grossly. I saw Singing in the Rain during its premier week. It was at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, if you know where that is. What I recall most distinctly about the experience is the audience breaking into applause after every number. Hollywood was then a small, company town.

I’m hoping Raimi goes back to his Evil Dead roots with this one; you know back when he didn’t suck so much. I’m sure the material is strong enough to handle the director’s “auteur” vision of its significance.

BTW/ I watched the Animal Farm (1999) film last night. I don’t recall Orwell predicting the fall of the Berlin Wall and the rise of American hegemony. I need to go back and read that.

Thanks guys. It doesn’t mean a movie actually gets made, just that one could now be made. Raimi would be perfect for this book series.

It will never happen. If we believe it will never happen, it will never happen. Like making the baseball diamond in Field of Dreams, but in reverse. DON’T STOP NOT BELIEVIN’!

What’s bad is seeing a producer/director remake their own films. John Carpenter remade “The Fog”, for the love of Pete. The Freakin’ Fog!

    Congrats michael.

    Michael –

Best wishes on (potentially) bringing this to fruition. You gotta have at bats. Now you’ve got an at bat.

    Best of luck.

    Drew:

Thanks. I may make enough to become a Republican. 😉

There ain’t a Republican tent big enough in the world for an asshole like you. nyuk, nyuk. nyuk

Seriously, lives and careers have inflection points. Sounds like you have created a unique and great opportunity for yourself. I wish you nothing but the best in this endeavor.
