The Life of Pi

Last night I watched The Life of Pi. It’s a beautifully made picture, visually stunning, and in one respect it surprised me, a respect that I don’t think one would take away from the trailers.

It’s the most deeply religious movie I’ve seen in decades. It’s not religious in the sentimental devotional way of the biblical epics of the 50s or 60s or of the “Christian” movies of today but in a much more basis way. Whether you’re religious or not I think you’ll enjoy it.

I won’t say much more about it. I’ll only ask you a question. Which story do you prefer?

the one with the tiger — is that even disputable?

I haven’t seen it. I’ve heard a lot about it though. Unfortunately, most of my movie/tv watching is with the kids – so, is this something kids (10-11 yo) might enjoy?

Our kids watched it at ages at 9 and 12 and I think they enjoyed it. I don’t think they understood the deeper message of the movie, but it works as a boy’s adventure story.

The Common Media website appears to think it’s too intense for children under twelve. As my wife likes to say, kids these days weren’t raised on Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. There is animal violence, mostly off screen.

  • I would say it’s less objectionable than, say, Transformers or The Avengers and one to two notches more objectionable than Disney’s animal documentaries of the 1950s.
