The Fourth City

Chicago used to be the second largest city in the U. S. It lost that distinction to Los Angeles with the 1980 decennial census.

I predict that when the results of the 2020 decennial census are released that Houston will be the third largest city in the U. S. while Chicago is fourth. If the census enumeration were to start now I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if it had fallen even farther. As I see it the only way that might not happen is by the phony baloney estimates of population that are made.

This isn’t the post this belongs to, but I’m reposting this comment here because I f**kin don’t like to be called a cheat or a thief by someone who ought to know better and am not sure he would read belated posts.

    To Steve:

‘Missing that poll tax arent you?’

And which party was the one who instituted poll taxes and voting restrictions on blacks in the Deep South? It wasn’t the Republicans. BTW I made no mention of a poll tax or putting any other restriction on getting a card (including cost, I support it being free of charge) other than one be a bona fide citizen of this country, so don’t put words in my mouth.

‘Keeping people from voting is your primary goal. That is why you guys support voter ID cards. It’s all the same for you guys.’

I want to keep people who aren’t US citizens from voting. Including ones who don’t exist any more. Do you really want the dead and foreign nationals deciding our elections?

Steve, I’ve had post conversations with you and stood up for you on occasion. Don’t accuse me of being a cheat or a thief or supporting thievery. Don’t smear me baselessly. I know enough about the history of big city politics to be aware of how machines stole elections in the past. Dave has personal experience of it. Look at the Paterson NJ election disaster. Voter mail fraud exists big time. Voter ID ain’t a poll tax if it’s provided free.

I’m perfectly willing to be on the losing side of elections, as long as my Constitutional rights aren’t taken away as a result. But I’m not willing to be sold a bill of goods and told I’m a bigot for questioning the bill.

Maybe there’s some civic pride involved for natives. But one of the four biggest cities wouldn’t be our choice.
We actually lived in Houston in 1981, the level of violence was disturbing to say the least, ordinary people shooting each other in traffic over perceived offenses. Flat, shimmering steel and concrete stretching 30 miles out from the center in any direction made me feel trapped. Rain every morning and humidity every afternoon. Cookie cutter apartments and strip malls anchored by adult book stores. Bars, bars, bars, drinking seems to be the main entertainment activity.
No, If I were to design a city it would not look like Houston.
