Tech Support Scammers

Well, that’s a first for me. I just received a call on my home phone. The young woman on the other end of the line had a strong South Asian accent. She said “I’m a Microsoft-certified support person. We have been receiving messages from your home computer…” I cut her off. “Who do you represent?” Silence. “What company are you with?” Silence, then “I’m not with any company” to which I replied “Thank you very much. Goodbye.” Click.

An obvious scam. I wonder if people actually fall for this stuff.

Apparently, I’m not the only one who’s had this experience.

The way I had it figured they were calling me to let me allow them to plant malware on my home computer which they would then want me to pay them to remove.

  • If I were the me of 40 years ago, I would have allowed them to take control of a PC I’d prepared for the process in advance and scoured the hard drive of their computer and any computer on their network I could get at. I’ve mellowed.

If I were the me of 40 years ago….

Have you mellowed, or do you just not want to bother? This sounds like the perfect way to handle such things.

Geez. I’m waiting for that call.

“Tech Support Windows, blah, blah, blah.”

“Really?. Do you speak Linux, because my system is saying ‘Fuck you’ right now.”

My wife got this call a few days ago. It sounds like it would be a bit confusing at first to realize that an actual live person is taking the time and money to run this scam, as opposed to sending out spam or recorded messages.

She was under the impression they said they were calling from Microsoft, but the connection was very poor.

  • These gnats bug me at least once a week and have done so for at least the past seven months. The name that shows up on caller ID keeps changing, the voices change, but they’re all S. Asian.

I’ve reached a point where, when they pause for their first breath, I just tell them F-off and hang up. If I want to jerk them around, I put on my doddery old man voice and tell them that it’s impossible that I have a problem with the Windows… the window-washer was just here yesterday.
