Sorting

As I think I’ve said before, I’m spending a considerable amount of time these days sorting through my mother’s worldly goods. In particular over the last week I’ve shredded roughly twenty years of cancelled checks. Not only are their my mother’s and father’s cancelled checks for all of their married life but my mother’s checks since my dad died, as well as the cancelled checks from my dad’s law practice.

Twenty years shredded, forty more to go.

I also have more than sixty years of tax returns and supporting documentation, not just for my parents and for my mother but for the law firm that my dad belonged to about the time I was born. Yesterday I opened a file and out poured the income records for a law firm that ceased to exist more than a half century ago.
