Social Security or Abortion?

I’m not going to link to Paul Krugman’s column today but I do want to consider a question inspired by it. In it he analogizes the Affordable Care Act to Social Security implying that over time it will gain near-universal support. Is he right? Or is will its fate be more like abortion—a battle that never ends?

Social Security. With some changes, of course. But even SS has undergone some changes over the years — I hear-tell that black people get Social Security these days, and even Veteran’s Benefits, some of them, and YOU KNOW there was never supposed to be! Even FDR promised that would never happen. Oh God, how will this sacred country ever endure?

I’m with Krugman. Social Security’s the model. Unless American businessmen and politicians decide to hand out 3 trillion dollars a year in extra pay and benefits so everyone here really can purchase health care out of their own pockets. Do you expect that soon?
