We’ve finished our Thanksgiving meal and, while we eat our dessert, over on Turner Classic Movies they’re playing the movie Shenandoah (with Jimmy Stewart). This movie is heartrending and except for one tiny, little moment is completely inappropriate as a Thanksgiving movie. The moment is the wonderful not-quite-in-the-spirit-of-the-thing grace from Stewart’s character, Charlie Anderson:
Lord, we cleared this land. We plowed it, sowed it, and harvested it. We cooked the harvest. It wouldn’t be here and we wouldn’t be eating it if we hadn’t done it all ourselves. We worked dog-bone hard for every crumb and morsel, but we thank you Lord just the same for the food we’re about to eat, amen.
