Sauganash Fourth of July, 2013

In the Chicago neighborhood in which I live, Sauganash, the big event isn’t a fireworks display. It’s the annual Sauagash Fourth of July parade. The parade begins with a delegation from the Chicago Police Department, this year followed by several fire trucks.

A vintage firetruck.

The local Scout troop.

Local pols frequently participate. This not being an election year, we’ve just got the sign. D’Amico himself wasn’t there.

I think these pipers are retired Chicago police officers.

Participants from Swedish Covenant Hospital.

As you see.

This year we had the Stanley Cup. Well, an inflatable replica of the Stanley Cup.

The Sauganash Community Church had a delegation.

Here in Sauganash “parade” isn’t a noun. It’s a verb. Consistent with the Irish tradition, parade is not something you watch but something you do. Offhand I’d say at least 400 people marched in the parade. Marchers easily outnumbered us viewers. They also serve, etc.

There were both two-legged marchers and four-legged marchers. Here’s a particularly jaunty-looking fellow.

I’m guessing that the youngster in this photo, pictured here in utero, probably won’t remember this year’s parade. He or she will be back next year.

And, bringing up the rear, the Chicago Police Department.

Tally looks a little glum in this picture but she loved the parade. Fifteen years and three months.

  • I have to say Dave, she looks excellent given her age.

  • They both do. 😉

Tally’s sight is failing, her hearing is iffy, and I think she’s losing her sense of smell. She has arthritis, shuffles around the house like an old lady in houseslippers, and talks to herself a lot.

Nonetheless her indomitable spirit remains, she still loves playing ball in the backyard (despite not being able to see the ball if it goes more than 3-4 feet away from her), and she had a fantastic time watching the parade. Afterwards she basked in all the attention she received. A good day for her.

So Tally hasn’t gotten cantankerous yet? If she has any chronic pain you must be managing it very well.

  • We give her Rimadyl (NSAID) daily and she gets an Adequan shot every couple of weeks. When her liver numbers started deteriorating, as can happen with the Rimadyl, we began giving her Milk Thistle (silymarin), which research suggests is effective against toxin-induced liver damage. Her liver numbers improved almost immediately and have remained stable.

Nice neighborhood parade pictures, Dave. They’re so old-fashioned and low tech, too.

Milk thistle is also said to lower the LDL component in cholesterol.

Mrs. Glittering Eye is much younger than Dave. Much, much younger.

  • And fitter.
