Remember the War in Ukraine?

While I’m asking questions, does anybody remember the war in Ukraine? We haven’t been reading/hearing nearly as much about it lately as we did a couple of weeks or months ago.

Why aren’t we hearing so much about the war in Ukraine?

  1. We’re hearing just as much; you just aren’t paying attention.
  2. The news from Ukraine is so good, the western media aren’t reporting it.
  3. It’s being crowded out by domestic news.
  4. There is nothing new to report.
  5. The news from Ukraine is so bad, the western media aren’t reporting it.
  6. There’s a war in Ukraine?

Here’s what isn’t the answer: B.

I’ve been following it fairly closely.

I’d say it’s mostly a variant of C. The media generally prefer the “shiny” story with simple narratives to generate clicks and engagement; the current conflict doesn’t fit the mold.

I’d add that D is a secondary factor – the war is a currently grinding attritional fight without much apparent progress.

  • I’ve been following it as closely as I can, both in the Western and Russian language media. I’m skeptical of both sets of accounts.

I’m with Andy. I think media neglect is just fine with the Biden Admin. No mentions of “quagmire.”

Americans dont actually care about foreign policy or foreign stuff in general. Coverage of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and Iraq really tapered off after a while and we had our own soldiers there. Also, the weather is bad and it is a grind. If something changes and it happens when the weather is better it will pick up for a bit.

It’s D — nothing new to report except the US keeps propping up Ukraine with endless funding:

It is a lull — I think most news coverage is waiting for the long promised Ukrainian counter-offensive of this summer — it should start anytime from mid-April until July 1 based on WWII campaigns.

That’s not to say there isn’t stuff being covered. The Washington Post had an article this week that poured doubts on the “leaked story” that it was Ukrainian partisans but not the Ukrainian government that bombed the Nordstream pipelines. (https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2023/04/03/nord-stream-bombing-yacht-andromeda/)

If it turns out the “leaked story” was fabricated, it gives a lot of credence that the US government was complicit or participated in the bombing in some fashion.
