Our weekend in the Quad Cities

My wife, Tally, Jenny, and I spent the weekend in the Quad Cities this weekend. Today Tally was entered in the Tri-Valley Kennel Club’s show as a veteran (to translate from the dogshow-ese a veteran is a dog or bitch aged seven or older). And, of course, we stayed with Bob and Nancy at the Caboose. I’ve written about the Caboose before. Highly recommended. A family of four (and pets!) can stay there very comfortably at a very reasonable price. Much better than a chain motel.

Saturday we just spent relaxing and kicking around. Somewhat by accident we discovered a very decent restaurant: Phoenician Cafe. Lebanese homecooking-style food. It reminds me a great deal of church suppers or the “Lebanese businessman’s lunch” the ladies of St. Raymond’s, a Maronite church in St. Louis that I used to attend occasionally, used to prepare. If you’re a fan of good Middle Eastern food and happen to be in the Quad Cities area try it out.

Now I said “somewhat by accident” because we discovered the Phoenician Cafe when we were on our way to Whitey’s in Davenport. If ice cream is your thing, you’ll be in heaven if you go to Whitey’s. Very excellent ice cream. Right up there with Ted Drewes in St. Louis. I was hungry and I can’t eat ice cream on an empty stomach so we got a quick lunch at Phoenician Cafe and then went to Whitey’s for shakes.

And, as I said, on Sunday Tally was in a dog show. She took First Group Veteran in the Working Group. Actually, there wasn’t a lot of competition but we were still happy. Tally looked great and showed her heart out. We’re proud of her.
