Newspaper Endorsements: North County Times

The North County Times, a southern California daily with a circulation of about 75,000, has endorsed Mitt Romney for president:

While acknowledging the many good things President Obama has done, as we look ahead to the next four years, we believe his basic philosophic framework has consistently proven the wrong approach to addressing our nation’s serious, systemic financial challenges.

Unemployment has continued at extremely high levels —- and is worse than the official figures indicate, because hundreds of thousands of people have simply given up looking for a job and no longer count among the unemployed.

And deficit spending —- formerly denounced by no less than then-Sen. Obama as one of the gravest dangers to our nation’s future health —- has abated not one whit under the Obama administration. We continue to mortgage future generations’ economic possibilities in order to fund today’s spending.

We believe a fundamental shift in governing is needed, one that recognizes that only a fiscally healthy government can provide the services unique to its role. One that views the government as our Founders did —- as the natural threat to individual liberty it by definition is.

Mitt Romney is the candidate who most closely shares this view of limited government, of ultimate authority resting with the people.

The North County Times endorsed John McCain in 2008.
