My Gripe

My gripe about the “microaggressions” and “safe space” stuff is that it’s completely post hoc. There is no behavior or statement that is so banal and harmless that it can faithfully be determined in advance that absolutely nobody will be offended by it. What’s missing from the formulation is the intention of the speaker or actor.

Consequently, both constructions serve primarily as cudgels used to beat up people you don’t like.

A few weeks ago the phrase “hard worker” was declared a micro-aggression. I’m wondering if calling someone a lazy field hand is also a bad thing.

I don’t know, ice. But I heard that NBA refs have requested armed guards to accompany them up and down the court to provide a safe space from fans and players in the event of a blown call. In addition, stadium organists have been banned from playing Three Blind Mice. My god it’s about time…..

My gripe is that the concept is so completely disconnected from the practical functioning of a real world.

    LMAO!

My gripe is that the concept [of micro-aggressions & safe spaces] is so completely disconnected from the practical functioning of a real world.

[okay, let’s check tags … Good!]

Communism was disconnected from practical functioning in the real world, too, Drew, and that didn’t stop anyone. Hell, they often doubled down on the stupid, with things like Purges and Cultural Revolutions, too! So that isn’t really a concern to them. In fact, it’s probably a feature, not a bug.

    … Cultural Revolutions …

The Cultural Revolution was required because vile scum was trying to impede the paradise that the great philosopher Mao was creating.

As the world’s greatest philosopher, Mao realized that “political power grows out of the barrel of a gun”, and therefore, he was not murdering millions of people. He was simply obtaining power. It was no different than our elections.

Back when you were having issues with your neighbor, the problem was you and your neighbors approach. His dog needed his safe space, but you all kept micro-aggressing. Then, you should explained to the guy that you needed your safe space, and I am sure he would have been completely understanding.

Ah, my neighbor. I’ve been following his ongoing legal troubles. He got caught driving with a suspended license. While smoking dope. With children in the car.

But once the state’s appeal fails, he’s going to walk. You see, they had no probable cause to pull him over, despite having received a tip that he was doing these things. Apparently anonymous tips don’t actually amount to anything in a Florida court of law. (No, I had nothing to do with the case, other than that I’m following it online.)

The problem with anonymous tips is the same as the “swatting” problem. There is no telling why the person was leaving the “tip”. In his case, the tip could have caused them to increase patrols in the area, and if he was actually violating the law, they could have legally stopped him.

Unless he could afford an attorney, the city/county attorney probably could have gotten him to plead guilty to something. My guess is that the reason he keeps getting off is because your jails and prisons are overcrowded, and they release the least or non-three strikes convicts. (Your Sheriff probably has never heard of tents and buses.)

The clue to the magnitude of “microaggressions” is the leading five letters — “micro.” “Smallness” is what is enlarged and overly emphasized in this country. It’s the irritating, the insulting, the trivial egregiousness of a circumstance/event, accentuating physical/cultural differences in a diverse country that gets into people’s craw, providing personal legitimacy to vociferously vent, take radical action, and/or vote for someone providing instance lip-service solutions to their grievance.

However, big issues — a huge national debt, viciousness of foreign/domestic aggressors, the growing dependence on social programs, decrease in labor participation in the midst of economic stagnation — these macro problems are rationalized, muted or simply ignored.

Meh. Some weirdness at some colleges that will go away.

…and, nothing will be left in the wake of this weirdness? Hmmm, hope you’re right on this one, Steve!

“hope you’re right on this one”

Well, history is on my side. Has there ever been an older generation that did not complain about “kids these days”?
