Modern Industrial Policy

If it’s been a while since you’ve eaten breakfast, take a look at Bruce Krasting’s take on Kansas City Southern Railway Company’s low interest loan from the Railroad Rehabilitation and Improvement Financing Program. The part that he misses is where a very small portion of GE’s earnings get recycled into political contributions.

The best government money can buy.

Here’s my contribution to this story. The number of GE’s U. S. employees has been declining for years. According to its financial statements over the last five years KCS’s head count has declined by about 5%.

Jobs, jobs, jobs.

The disappointing thing isn’t that our pols can be bought, it’s that they’re so cheap.

Why bother talking about jobs? There aren’t enough. And it is all the fault of the morally bankrupt poor people. We know we’re morally bankrupt because otherwise we’d all be rich. We all know that nothing ever happens to people that they don’t deserve. Drew told me so.

I just saw your comment in the previous thread, ice pick. You are 44?

You are a young man. At the risk of yet another harpoon aimed at my chest, don’t give up, you have so much time to recover. So much time.

And I never said morally bankrupt. I said defeatist. WAY big difference.

As much as economics is castigated as a soft science, certain ” laws” seem to never change. Maybe not as rigid as gravity or the conservation of energy, but pretty damned close. The private sector will find a way. Government will waste our time and money.

Drew, how am I supposed to recover? That’s four years of nothing, with several more to come. Even beyond what I have seen personally, the studies are clear – lifetime earnings of the long-term unemployed get crushed. I didn’t even get very far up the income ladder (didn’t care about it), and I’m already out a few hundred thousand dollars. That will not be recovered, nor will I ever get back onto the income track I was on.

DELETED all the stuff on Drew the Deterministic Asshole.

Yes, the private financial sector found a great way in 2008 to make profits – just make the government give it to them. Hurray for the private sector! Hurray for innovation! Hurray for friends in high places!

Never mind, ice pick. Can I at least pick up the cost of the bullets for your revolver?
