Meathead Criticizes Anti-Trumpers

The Hill reports that actor and director Rob Reiner gets why celebrities should moderate the language they use in criticizing the president:

Director Rob Reiner denounced Robert De Niro and other celebrities for their remarks against President Trump, saying it only helps the president.

During an exclusive interview with The Hill’s new TV show “Rising,” which aired on Wednesday, Reiner addressed the controversy surrounding actor Robert De Niro’s “F—Trump” speech during the Tony Awards on Sunday.

De Niro called the president a “f—ing idiot” and a “f—ing fool,” which was met with a standing ovation.

“You’re helping Trump by saying ‘F— Trump,’ because he can say ‘look at these people, these elitists,’ ” Reiner told “Rising” co-hosts Krystal Ball and Buck Sexton.

Reiner said he thinks celebrities are ultimately hurting Democrats when they go on expletive-ridden rants against Trump.

“There’s a very fine line between energizing the base and energizing the other side,” Reiner said.

Whether you’re part of the Democratic leadership or not, anyone in the public eye can help or hurt the Democratic brand by his or her remarks. Rather than venting, why not be the better man?

I would broadly agree. As I said, celebrities don’t really represent most people on the left, but the conservatives have convinced people that they do, especially their base. What i would kind of disagree with is the part about being the better man. No one seems to care if you are the better man or take the high road. What you are doing is just not giving the other side ammunition to use against you.

It used to be fundamentalists and evangelicals who reacted strongly and negatively to foul language. I’m an atheist who is carrying on the tradition. I react negatively to anyone who uses the singular “they” and who has no clue about proper used of the subjunctive.

To me it’s interesting that folks who observe the standard American English usage are never judged negatively by those who don’t, while those who do do.
