Luke Cage

I just finished watching Luke Cage, the straight-to-streaming TV series that Netflix dropped a week or so ago.

Marvel began publishing the Luke Cage character long after my comic book days were over—in the early 1970s. My understanding is that it’s rooted in the blaxploitation films of that time so Luke Cage is cut from the same cloth as Shaft, Slaughter, and the other characters of the genre. Except he’s a superhero, with the soap opera overlay of Marvel comics.

I liked Luke Cage. If I were to rank the Marvel-Netflix collaborations, from first to last I’d say Daredevil (season 1), Luke Cage, Daredevil (season 2), and Jessica Jones. That’s not to say that Jessica Jones wasn’t pretty good.
