It’s Official!

Chicago received 16 inches of snow yesterday. That makes it the 7th heaviest snowfall on record here.

It was very pretty in Naperville yesterday. All the snow covering the generous population of trees overhanging neighborhood streets etc. of course today it will start to diminish. And in a few days devolve into a dirty, sloppy mess. You get 1-2 good days for all this aggravation.

My daughter sent a picture of it all down to her cousin in Naples. In return she got a picture from the then occurring boat ride in the Gulf. Sunny and 74.

Today I will be calling SW Airlines. “I’d like to book a flight to Ft Myers please……”

Currently getting a heavy rain, with water standing in the front yard. 75℉ outside. I love Florida’s climate!

    View from my from window.

Might now have much, but those rich Californians would kill for my water supply.

Also saw a bald eagle down at the lake at the end of the street last week. Very cool, though I didn’t get good pictures from my cell phone. Saw it carry off a carcass up into a tree. Goes well with the black bears and coyotes we’ve got now!

  • Florida has climate? When did that happen? I thought it just had weather. Warmer weather than Chicago but weather nonetheless.

We DO have climate, and it is ours: subtropical, surrounded by moderating ocean. Even Georgia & Alabama are different. Basically, we’re a giant island of the Bahamas. Technically we’re humid subtropical in this part of the state, and farther south they’re tropical savannah, or some such nonsense.

  • On no topic in particular, there was a book I absolutely loved when I was a kid and that I think you might find interesting as a native Floridian. It’s by A. W. Dimock and it’s titled Dick in the Everglades. It’s available on Project Gutenberg.

The reason I think you might find it interesting is that it’s an outdoorsman’s description of the Everglades a century ago when there wasn’t much south of Ft. Myers.

    I’ll check into that.

  • He wrote at least three books on Florida and if I’m not mistaken they’re all in the public domain.
