It’s All So Clear Now!

Check out The Onion’s Guide To Understanding The Debt Ceiling Crisis. Here’s a snippet:

What happens if the government defaults on its debt?

The United States will lose the credibility and respect we incorrectly assume other nations still hold toward us.

It’s almost too true to be funny.

Yeah. And I suspect they’ll revise this, too.

Madcap, and in quite a few places close to the truth. I’ve always liked the Onion, almost as much as Mad Magazine.

    And now, something completely different……….

For those interested – and that will probably number 0-1 – you may be able to watch me play golf on TV in the upcoming McGladrey Classic in Sea Island. Golf Channel is supposed to carry the pro-am on Nov. 6 – sponsored by the Davis Love Foundation. Since the draws occur at Davis’ house the night before, I don’t know who I will be playing with. But if I hit the camera, I’ll leave it up to the enterprising to figure out which one is me. It will be the one striping it right down the middle and knocking down flagsticks…..mebbee.

    Heh.

    Red:

    Good luck!

    Red:

Also, I finally bought a new car, a Benz E350 convertible. My wife finally relented on the idea of a convertible, but only if I could still drive the kids (backseat needed) and loaded it with safety stuff, of which Mercedes has a full package. (I avoided the active intervention stuff.)

I wanted the Shelby, but no roll bars and the backseat is more a suggestion of a seat than anything usable. Yes, I’m already regretting not getting the 550, despite there being nowhere around here I could possibly use that kind of power. And yet. . .

Black on black with tan interior.

Oh, and I’ve got the new illuminated star thing so that, as Katherine put it, people can see me coming at night and think, “What a dick.”

I will start with this one:

“Oh, and I’ve got the new illuminated star thing so that, as Katherine put it, people can see me coming at night and think, “What a dick.””

She must be a wonderful woman……

But seriously, you no good dirty filthy sob…….oh, wait……The Davis Love Foundation is a good cause. Thanks for the wishes. I will play fine. But the kids and poor families really win. One of about 6 charity thingy’s I really take seriously.

I was walking past Andersen’s in Naperville about a week ago and saw a sign “author signing tonight.” Better not have been you. You diss me when in town and I’ll have to dismember you….

When I was in CT there was a guy who (dangerously) drove his Shelby through the winding roads near our house. Nice car. Good throat. Fall, with wet and slick leaves on the road……..dangerous. I capitulated and got a 2013 Boxster S about 8 months ago. Truth? Best sports car I have owned. Better than the Carrera. This time of year Galena, IL calls for rural driving and just poking around…….when golf does not. Dave noted a good bed and breakfast there for me awhile back. We hope to get there. Lake Geneva, WI is also still a great weekend spot. May buy a place.

Now, back to our regular programming…….you know that two faced no good incompetent Obama……….

    Drew,

If I knew anything about golf, I could give you some sort of “good wishes’ comment, relevant to the game. But, I don’t, so will have to lean on something standard, such as “look out for the sand traps, and have fun!”.

    Michael,

Bigger toys for …. In all seriousness, be safe and enjoy…

    @Michael

    A German car?

Thanks. Just an anecdote, although since you don’t play………anyway.

Third tier pro hits his drive under a tree about 10 feet from me. He has about 100 yards —-over a bunker —-to a tight pin on the green. Its a “no way” shot. I figure he is going to hit it in the bunker and hope to get up and down for par.

He hits a low screamer, on the green with so much backspin it checks and ends up about 6 feet for birdie. He makes it.

Glad I took up private equity, these guys are other worldly.

  • jan Link

    Drew,

…but, then again you play for ‘fun,’ and a pro plays for a living. So, he has to be ‘other worldly.’ People so outstanding in sports are the gladiators of old, while the rest of us just fill up the stadiums, vicariously playing and cheering them on.

    Michael and Drew,

I can fit a full 4X8 sheet of plywood in the back of my 8 year old minivan. I”m all about the back seat.

  • Red Barchetta Link

    Andy

I’ve spoken to women in your area; you are an item …………jest-a- kidding.

I forgot this: Michael – Mercedes is now well past their dark days on quality. They are simply kicking it right now. Great cars. I dumped the BMW sedan, bought an ML SUV for utility (I’m all about the back seat and, uh, its because I have a 15 year old and her girl friends to drive around to events now. I’m domesticated.) and the toy car.

    Ben:

I’m getting the kid a Ford, and entirely on the grounds that it’s the best and safest car I can find that he might actually like. Ford Fusion. It’s a Top Safety Pick Plus, loaded with additional safety stuff, get’s good mileage, does well in road tests.

  • michael reynolds Link

    Drew:

90% of my driving now is with kids. I am a taxi. Now I’m a taxi with the top down.

  • Andy Link

    Drew,

Heh, few women can resist the allure of a middle-aged married man with kids.

My “fun” car is a 1971 Chevy Blazer, though it needs a bit of body work. Once we settle down (moving every 2-3 years keeps our “stuff” level low) I’d like to get a late 60’s Mustang.

    Michael,
I’m a taxi too, hence the minivan. I’d have more choices with two kids instead of three, but I’m actually really happen with it. It’s very practical and drives very well considering what is.

  • Ben Wolf Link

    @Michael
Not criticizing you for going non-American, I just had the impression you’d tend toward something more exotic, although that may come from reading your books. Makes sense though if your wife is as safety-obsessed as you indicate.
