Interesting Times (Drug Legalization Edition)

This has got to be one of the oddest stories I’ve seen in a long time. Not only does Berkeley want to legalize pot, they want to subsidize its consumption by the poor:

The Berkeley City Council last week approved a measure for the November ballot that would authorize the city to license and tax six pot cultivation sites. Companies running the facilities must agree to give away some pot to low-income users, employ organic gardening methods to the extent possible and offset in some way the large amount of electricity needed to grow weed.

The emphasis is mine.

Talk about removing the sting of poverty.

For those of us concerned about the health effects of pot, I wonder if they could make those vouchers, which would also be good for MD 20/20?

I did catch an interesting NPR story a few Saturdays ago about California environmental groups concerned that the state cannot be carbon neutral, let alone reduce it’s carbon footprint, if pot is legalized. If one listened carefully one could hear contradictory utopian visions clashing violently inside skulls.

Ah, Berkeley. The upside is that it’ll clear all the homeless out of San Francisco.

Do we have to subsidize cell phone and transportaion costs to procure said weed? And you know, as a former afficianado, you need electricity to keep it cooled. Gotta subsidize that too, right?

That’s pretty much the mindset these days.
