I’m baaack

Well, I was hacked again.  It took a while to get back up (mostly due to the pokiness of my web host’s technical support).  I took the opportunity to make a change I’d planned to my old MT archives—I’m going to suggest my change to the WordPress developers as an enhancement to the conversion from MT to WP.

I’ll be tinkering with my template to get my logo up, the sidebar formatted the way I want it, etc.

But at least I’m back.  I was starting to get the shakes.

  • Me, too. Good to see you back up. Now get back to work.

  • Welcome back. Do you know how they’re getting into your site, and is it fixable?

  • I’m pretty certain that I’ve plugged all the holes this time, Jeff. Although my web host’s technical support believes it was due to my running a version of WordPress that wasn’t absolutely the latest I believe it was due to my retention of my old MT archives (although I’d disabled everything I could and set access control on all the folders to prevent it). I was holding on to the old archives to preserve the integrity of other people’s links to me.

But I’d already come up with a way to completely dump MT and still preserve the integrity of the links. I plan on suggesting it to the WordPress developers since it would be a lot easier to do when they’re doing their conversion from MT to WP rather than after the fact.

So I dumped MT completely, put my preservation scheme into place, and upgraded to the latest and greatest versions of WP and Spam Karma (which I dearly love).

I suspect that will close the holes. I can only wait.

Welcome back, I missed you! AJ

  • Dave,

Your absence disrupted my daily routine. It was almost more than I could take. It’s good to see you again.

  • Welcome back. Any idea who would hack you, and why?

  • I’m sure it was just an attack of opportunity. There are bots that prowl the web looking for vulnerabilities. Apparently they found what’s called an “exploit” (a weakness that can be exploited) on my site and used it to plant a program on my web host. I believe I’ve closed that loophole now.

  • Welcome back, I wondered where you’d got to!
