How We Got the Packard

When I was a kid we had an old used Packard for a while. It was a heavy, lumbering, gray behemoth. It looked something like a tank and was probably nearly as heavy. It smelled musty and probably didn’t get more than 5 miles per gallon.

My dad had gotten it as part of the settlement of a debt owed to one of his clients. He sent the Packard to an auction house to get the cash to give to his client. He also sent my mom to the auction with the instruction to “bid it up”.

The auctioneer opened the bidding at $50. My mom bid $50. And that’s how we got the Packard.
