How to Tell the News from a Spoof (Updated)

Joe Gandelman notes that MSNBC recently mistook a parody blog site for a real celebrity blog site and reported quotes found there as legit. I actually think that Joe’s a little hard on poor MSNBC. After all it’s frequently pretty hard to distinguish MSNBC from a parody news site, so I can see how an MSNBC staffer could make the mistake.

Fortunately, unlike blogs real journalism sites have editors to keep these things from happening.

Update

Speaking of how useful editors are Mover Mike digs up an instance of the editors re-writing a news story in such a way that it misrepresents what actually happened.
