His friends turned out for him

Last night my wife and I went to the wake of the friend I mentioned earlier. And this morning we went to his funeral.

His friends turned out for him.

The wake was from 3:00pm to 9:00pm on Friday evening. My wife and I walked over to the funeral home which was just a few blocks away a little before 3:00 Friday afternoon. We waited in line for nearly an hour before we got in to the viewing. By my estimate there were 500 to 700 people at the wake while we were there and probably 1,500 to 2,000 people overall.

We paid our respects to his widow, children, parents, and brother (whom I’ve mentioned before), said a brief prayer, and walked home.

This morning we attended his funeral at 10:00am at Queen of All Saints, our parish church.

His friends turned out for him.

Queens holds about 1,200 people in the pews. The pews were completely filled and there were people standing in the aisles. There were fourteen concelebrants. I’ve never seen so many concelebrants for the funeral of someone who wasn’t a priest. He was piped in to “Going Home” and he was piped out to “Amazing Grace”.

The parking lot of the church was only about half full. Very clearly most of the people in attendance had walked there.

His friends turned out for him.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him.
