Hamburger night

Over the last few years I’ve settled into a routine in cooking. Every Monday night is hamburger night. I dutifully hie off to Happy Foods and purchase 3/4 lb. of ground sirloin and two buns. I make three hamburgers: one for me, one for my wife, and one for the dogs.

Having a Jenn-Aire with an integral grill is really great. I prefer the griddle for burgers so I replace the grill plates with the griddle and let the griddle warm while I slice onions and form burgers. I put the onions and burgers on the grill. Six minutes each side.

About the time that the burgers go on the grill Jenny, our oldest, has staked out her place in the kitchen. She’ll wait there until her burger is served to her. Last night as soon as the burgers came off the grill Mira, our youngest, started yipping. My wife and I eat our burgers in as leisurely a manner as possible under the circumstances.

Once we’ve washed the dishes and cleaned the kitchen and the last burger has cooled enough we call the dogs. The dogs invariably crowd around us, eager for their burger. We place the dogs into an impatient sit, break the burger into pieces—at least 12 pieces—and slowly, quietly give a piece of burger to each dog oldest to youngest. Jenny, then Qila, then Tally, then Mira. Mira is very excited. She frequently breaks her sit to crowd closer and try to get another piece of burger. She’s put back into a sit and the burger distribution resumes. Jenny, then Qila, then Tally, then Mira until “All gone!”.

It’s a very happy time.

Try doing that with Basset Hounds…there will be more drool than hound after about 30 seconds of waiting…lol

  • Say, Barnabus, if you’re into bassets do you know Brian and Nancy Martin? Nancy is our handler. Brian, her husband, is one of the foremost handlers of bassets in the country. Good people.

Hey Dave. No I don’t know them, but thanks for the info. If they have any suggestions for dealing with arthritis in old Bassets I’d love to hear from them. My vet hasn’t been much help and we’ve tried a couple different chondroitin sulfate preparations.

  • We have three older Samoyeds, former and current athletes, who all have arthritis in varying degrees (we also have a two year old junior). We’re giving them Synovi G3 daily as a supplement and two are also receiving Adequan shots on a regular basis. We’ve noticed a marked improvement.
