Eye on the Watcher’s Council

As you may know the members of the Watcher’s Council each nominate one of his or her own posts and one non-Council post for consideration by the whole Council. The complete list of this week’s Council nominations is here.

The Colossus of Rhodey, “What Is “Freedom”?”

Hube’s submission for this week weaves together the 1983 dramatization of Orwell’s 1984 and the “right not to be offended” cases. One thing I’d like to add: there’s no single definition of freedom, each country has its own, and (in my view) that’s how it should be.

The Glittering Eye, “The Radicalization of American Politics”

Gosh, I wish the 60’s were over.

Done With Mirrors, “Liberal Fascism”

I’m glad that Callimachus nominated his critique of the thesis of Jonah Goldberg’s recent and, apparently, best-selling book. I thought it was a great post. I also can’t imagine a circumstance under which I’d read the book so C’s post is probably as close as I’ll get.

Wolf Howling, “Hillanomix 101”

GW considers Hillary Clinton’s ideas about economic policy and finds them wanting. GW, I don’t know if you’ve read my posts on this subject but HRC is a Fordist. She’s a firm believer in industrial policy. I think that was a perfectly reasonable view in the U. S. twenty or thirty years ago but in the globalized economy of today would play out something like The Red Shoes.

Rhymes With Right, “If Ever We Needed a Special Prosecutor (BUMPED)”

Greg comments on the indictment of a Texas Supreme Court Justice in an arson case. My brother-in-law is a retired arson investigator and through him I’m quite aware of the difficulty of proving an arson case.

Soccer Dad, “Rose Colored Rudy”

Soccer Dad assesses the state of Rudy Giuliani’s campaign for his party’s nomination for the presidency. I can’t say I share his enthusiasm for the former mayor of New York.

Cheat Seeking Missiles, “Di Caprio Lies and Hustles Bucks”

Laer analyzes a solicitation from the Natural Resources Defense Council he received. I wonder how he got on their list.

Bookworm Room, “The Problem With Obama’s Race”

Bookworm takes a look at the Obama campaign and identity politics. Welcome to the 21st century Democratic Party. They’ve only just begun!

Joshuapundit, “’I Have A Dream’ — The Democrat’s Version”

Identity politics and the Obama campaign are on Freedom Fighter’s mind, too, in his analysis of the Clinton-Obama squabble.

Big Lizards, “Mike Huckabee for Minister in Chief?”

Dafydd ab Hugh considers the Huckabee campaign. What can I say? I agree.

The Education Wonks, “Our Out of Control Borders: Who’s Accountable?”

EdWonk considers the murder of a Border Patrol agent by smugglers.

Right Wing Nut House, “Grim Choices Confront GOP”

Rick Moran isn’t happy with the pickle that conservatives are in. He doesn’t seem to understand that “Republican” and “conservative” are not interchangeable terms. Although most real political conservatives are Republicans not all Republicans are real political conservatives and conservatives have never wielded a great deal of power in the party. Here’s the crux of the problem: Reagan wasn’t a conservative.

Well, I’ve decided which posts I’ll be voting for this week. Which posts would get your votes?

  • I nominated it because I was feeling ornery, lol. I’m glad you liked it. But it’s never gonna win.

  • I thought it was the best thing you’d written all week.

It’s pretty obvious that I’m politically, well, different enough from enough of our fellow Council members that my submissions aren’t very well received. I take solace in the fact that, if the number of non-Council votes on my submissions were tallied, I’d be the hands-down winner.

BTW, I’m very pleased with new Council member Wolf Howling. He’s a bit farther to the right than I but I think that he and I are synergistic.

  • Wolf’s a good, thorough, fair-minded writer.
