Disengaged

I went to vote this afternoon, arriving at my polling place around 5:00pm. Judging by the number of voters that had already voted in my precinct and typical voting patterns the total turnout should be around 50%. Early voting and absentee voting may push it a little higher. The citywide turnout is anticipated to be around 30%.

That is incredibly disappointing. Thirty years ago 90% turnouts citywide were not unheard of. I don’t know how to interpret such a low degree of civic engagement. I don’t know whether it’s just plain disinterest, being overwhelmed with the coverage, phone calls, etc., or despair. Maybe some of all three.

I also don’t know who that low a turnout will benefit.

Sounds like you may have the first black woman mayor.

I don’t know what to make of low turnout. I’d speculate that it’s part disgust with candidates and government who have become a foreign entity, and people who have forgotten that our relative prosperity doesn’t happen by itself. It’s fragile.

So it turns out Mick Jagger has to have a heart valve replacement. The NHS is such a sparkling model of government run health care he’s ……………having his done in New York.

Meh. Rich people go wherever they want. Article just says NYC, but I would expect it is probably NYU where they have a floor or two dedicated to catering to the wealthy. Private chefs, nurses, fancy decor, etc. (Kind of think Columbia might have something similar.)

But lets see the other side of the problem. Neat new study came out and said hip fracture patients do better if they surgery within 6 hours of admission. Study is out of Canada. Easy for them since they have nationalized medicine and they can just look up records on anyone. Makes prep for surgery easy. Here in the US if the pt comes from another hospital system (even worse if they have never been hospitalized) we dont automatically have access to old records. May take a while to get them. Will be a challenge for us to match what the Canadians did.
