Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.
Frequently attributed to Abraham Lincoln this appears to be a paraphrase of Proverbs 17:28. I know of Roman versions, Arab versions, and Chinese versions of the comment which is part of the common heritage of human wisdom. It would be nice if more of us (and particularly public figures) heeded it.
