Be Careful What You Wish For

The latest slender reed on which Democrats and anti-Trumpers are relying in their year-long effort to impeach President Trump is that he has obstructed justice. In the New York Times David Leonhardt makes his case. It depends on nine points, relying heavily on imputed motive.

Impeachment is rare in the United States so it’s hard to generalize but I think that, should the Democrats win control of the House, they would be prudent in not using that as the linchpin of their case against Mr. Trump. Previous cases have not relied on imputed corrupt motives in the president’s exercising his otherwise legal powers. Such a precedent could go a long way towards making the country ungovernable if not fomenting an actual civil war.

Ken Starr’s notion of “lying to the people” as grounds for impeachment is even worse. If such a notion were to catch on it would make politics as we know it impossible.

On the plus side, we could impeach every politician.

  • I couldn’t figure out how to work it into the post but my reflex is to distrust any politician who’s been in office longer than a very few years. They inevitably come to conflate their own welfare with the public welfare.

Look, we already know it is OK to impeach over lying about sex. Just get Mueller to ask Trump a few questions about sex stuff. The guy is a compulsive liar, so you are bound to get him lying on that topic.
