April 9 remembered

Too many people seem to have forgotten what this is the anniversary of. Today is the second anniversary of the fall of Baghdad. Although it’s being met with resounding silence in the American blogosphere, Iraqi bloggers Riverbend of Baghdad Burning, Kurdo of Kurdo’s World, and neurotic iraqi wife remember with three very different points-of-view.

Riverbend

Two years and this is Occupation Day once more. One wonders what has changed in this last year. The same faces of April 2004, but now they have differing positions in April 2005. The chess pieces were moved around and adjusted and every one is getting tired of the game.

Kurdo

Unfortunately the beauty of the liberation was stolen by its owners. Sadly, the liberators did not respect the word itself, and in response, the goddess of liberation punished them and us and all.

But despite all the imperfections of the liberation, and all the downsides of the occupation, the event of 9th of April 2003 should have happened a decade if not decades before.

I couldnt go out, not because I wasnt happy, I was, but I didnt have the heart to go out and be joyful when I knew that the war wasnt over yet. When I knew that people were still suffering. I just couldnt. I watched that man holding Saddam’s poster and slamming it with his slippers and swearing. I began to smile. Good for you I said. You are finally FREE. Then the looting began and I sat there still bewildered at the events of that HISTORIC Day.
