A Measly 60 Years

I lost one of my relatively few silver amalgam fillings the day after Christmas. A measly sixty years of service and pfft! If he hadn’t been dead for 50 years, I’d have a good mind to go to Murphy and demand my money back.

Yesterday I went to my dentist, he pronounced the tooth still sound, and he installed a new composite filling. He assured me that it would probably last the rest of my life which doesn’t seem like that good a deal under the circumstances.

Celebrate with a bottle of Macallan 15-year.

  • Actually, I tend to favor the island scotches.

I’ve never heard of a filling lasting that long! My oldest filling — one of two that I have — started giving me trouble after Christmas. And, it’s around 25 years old. In fact I made a dental appointment for next week, to probably have it replaced. 60 years! That’s mind-boggling!

  • Yeah, Murphy was hell for stout.

Every time I have dental work, I think of Dr. Murphy, our childhood dentist and former Washington University football player, and how he forcefully wedged fillings into our teeth, using every iota of his strength combined with leverage to obtain a really strong filling.

  • I was going to mention that. When he put in a filling, he used his whole weight (which was considerable).
