A Field Guide to the Seven Deadly Sins

A while back Wired produced a set of maps of the Seven Deadly Sins in the United States using various measures as proxies for greed, envy, wrath, and so on. The map above is pride, an “aggregate of the other six offenses”. I note that the “Devilish” area in my neck of the woods is the North Shore.

I also note that Iowa and Nebraska rank as “Saintly” in all seven of the sins, driving me to the suspicion that they may be measuring something other than sinfulness.

For some reason or other I’m reminded of one of Groucho Marx’s wisecracks: “That reminds me of a great night I had on stage in Davenport, Iowa. Or was that on a davenport in Stage, Iowa?”

Let he who lives in Iowa (but not Dubuque or Cedar Falls) cast the first stone at non-panhandle Florida.

  • Let me see the South West is Devilish because of the ratio of average income with people living beneath the poverty line…hmmm any attempt to factor in legal and illegal immigrants wich are probably a tad bit more common in the South West than say…Nebraska? No? Shocking.

    Stupid article.
