Why They Do What They Do

If you’ve been wondering why your dog eats poop, this article at Scientific American might provide you with an answer. I won’t quote it, at least not this close to breakfast.

My own opinion is that it’s because your dog has a sweet tooth.

“My own opinion is that it’s because your dog has a sweet tooth.”

And is this conclusion based upon primary research, or hearsay?

    Sorry…….

  • Neither. Observation.

What I’ve seen is that dogs tend to prefer cat poo to their own and, based on ingredients, cat food tends to be sweeter than dog food.

Hmm, I’m not sure that the feces still contain sugars though. Of course our staff does refer to the litter box raids as “eating the tootsie rolls.”

We were taught that it’s mainly the undigested proteins that entices them- hence the remedies which are basically meat tenderizers to break down proteins. That article reports a very low success rate but I’m not familiar with any studies on it. We always advise trying that approach (plus of course picking up/disposing of stools) because it can’t hurt and seems to work in some cases.

In the words of the great Robert Plant. Does anyone remember laughter? Really, we are analytically dealing with dog do-do?

  • Hey, this is my life. On any given day I pick up several pounds of dog poop. I always have bags in my pockets. Gives an entirely new meaning to “baggy pants”.

    Also known as “Kitty Roca”.
